The Royal Free Charity

Improving hospital environments

Waiting to receive urgent treatment in a hospital is stressful – particularly when you’re sat somewhere busy and loud. A calm and comfortable waiting room can make the experience a little easier. That’s why we’re partnering with the Royal Free Charity to refurbish the waiting rooms in the hospital’s urgent treatment centre and resuscitation (resus) area. Our grant of £19,200 will provide new furniture and decoration.

  • The Royal Free Charity supports the evolving needs of the trust’s 1 million patients, 11,000 staff, and many research teams.

  • In 2021/22, there were 304,404 emergency attendances at Royal Free London.
  • Visits to A&E across the country have increased by nearly 20% in the last 10 years, and numbers are continuing to climb.

Calm and comforting waiting areas

The new urgent treatment centre waiting room will have a capacity for around 50 people. A range of seating will include recliner chairs, as well as chairs with a higher seat and armrests to support vulnerable patients to stand up more easily.

To help make the space more relaxing, there will be a screen livestreaming the view from nearby Hampstead Heath and digital ceiling tiles showing sunlight and clouds. The updated resus waiting room will have space for around six people at a time. With new furniture, a TV screen and refreshed décor, the space will be much more inviting for visitors.

This is our second grant to the Royal Free Charity. The first helped fund a state-of-the-art scanner.

“Growing demand for emergency services over recent years has led to increased pressure on our emergency departments and, sadly, to longer waiting times for patients. Many of our waiting areas are noisy and cramped. Waiting for a long time in a loud and stressful environment can make people anxious and frustrated. Your support will provide more comfortable seating, better lighting and more restful décor. This will create a calmer environment, which helps visitors relax and enables staff to deliver the very best care. The Kusuma Trust’s generosity will make a huge different to patients and families at a challenging time.“
