For the first time this year, our Kusuma University Talks took place over two days on 1 & 2 March. Co-hosted by Bayside and Westside schools, the event was attended by over 200 Year 12 students from Westside, Bayside, the Gibraltar College and Prior Park.
The first day began with a talk by Jane Marshall from Optimising Futures, on the benefits of a university education, how to choose the right university and course, and an introduction on how to apply. Former Westside student and Kusuma Excellence Prize recipient, Emily Feeke, spoke about her experiences at University, and offered tips on how to make the best of life at university. Sandy Mills, Admissions Director for Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, provided advice for anyone considering applying to Oxbridge, as well as how to strengthen the super-curricular aspect of a university application. Later in the day Jane ran sessions on drafting personal statements and interview techniques.
The second day of the event provided students the opportunity to participate in subject-specific talks, such as medicine, dentistry and veterinary science, as well as sessions on preparing for entrance exams and university study skills. Students who are not planning on applying university were offered the opportunity to attend non-university career talks organised by the schools.
Jane Marshall said: this was a hugely effective event made possible by the generous sponsorship of the Kusuma Trust Gibraltar. I thoroughly enjoyed working with the smashing students and staff from all the schools and the college and I look forward to helping the students with their applications and interviews later this year!”
