We are supporting the promotion of classical music in Gibraltar through a grant of £10,000 to the Gibraltar Philharmonic Society. Our grant will be used to support a classical concert that will be held in Spring 2021.
The Society is a registered charity that organises a programme of monthly concerts in Gibraltar. It has become known for the quality of the orchestras and artistes it brings, which include the English Chamber Orchestra, European Symphony Orchestra and soloists from the Vienna State Opera, The Metropolitan Opera (New York), Teatro alla Scala (Milan), Royal Opera House, Covent Garden (London), Berlin State Opera and Berlin Philharmonics to name a few.
The Society caters for those who enjoy and have an interest in classical music, but also aims to make classical music accessible to new audiences and children. Students and senior citizens benefit from half-price tickets and children under 18 attend for free. To encourage a high standard in the arts, the Society offers free tickets to all local schools and the Gibraltar Academy of Music and Performing Art (GAMPA). Two highlights of the Society’s annual calendar are the Gibraltar Proms and the New Year’s Concert for children, which introduces classical music and instruments to children in a fun and educational way.
James Lasry, Chairman of the Gibraltar Philharmonic Society thanked Kusuma Trust for the support: “The Gibraltar Philharmonic Society is delighted with the support from Kusuma Trust. This is a further testament to the fact that local organisations, charities and companies appreciate the value and importance of cultural events and classical music even in these difficult times.”
