When it comes to stem cell research, the UK’s Wellcome-MRC Cambridge Stem Cell Institute is a world leader. To keep up the pioneering work, they need the very best equipment.

Our grant of £200,000 will contribute to a state-of-the-art confocal microscope. The new piece of kit offers ‘super-resolution microscopy’, which can give researchers previously unobserved details of biological structures and processes. This level of imaging leads to greater insight into how our cells behave and, ultimately, helps improve the way we diagnose, treat and prevent diseases.

In 2019, the Institute moved to a new building, housing cutting-edge laboratories and bringing together research groups from multiple disciplines. The new space encourages greater collaboration between scientists and clinicians, and could help speed up the time it takes for stem cell discoveries to make a difference to patients.

We also made a £10,000 contribution towards both scientific and non-scientific photographic artwork for the building, helping create an inspiring environment for both researchers and visitors.
